SLABUP.COM Exclusive - Interview with Mike Posner
SLABUP: How did you get to where you are right now? Have you always wanted to sing?
MP: I always wanted to make music, but actually I only started singing about a year ago, I was strictly producing, for other people and I was tired of having my ideas having to go through someone else. I was writing hooks for the beats I was making…damn, my bad I am hella out of breath I just ran up some stairs, all I do is make music now I never go to the gym haha, but I didn’t have any singers to sing it for me, so I just started singing it myself. That’s what’s so exciting; I am still getting better every day at singing.
SLABUP: What are you studying at Duke?
MP: I am actually a Sociology and Business major.
SLABUP: Where do you find inspiration in your lyrics?
MP: Just real life man, I really don’t ever talk bout shit I don’t know about, so usually I am talking about shit that has actually happened to me.
SLABUP: What separates you from other artists in the game?
MP: Number one, the fact that I write produce and sing, you know my shit is not gonna sound like anyone else’s cuz I am not using a Swizz Beats beat, or a Neptunes beat, or a Timbaland beat, so just by nature it is going to sound different because I am making all of the music. And then, you know I am a different person than everyone else, and like I said in the last question I write about shit I know, and nobody is me and no one’s lyrics will be the same as mine, so I really take pride in my lyrics. I come from a hip-hop background so I try to write pop music that rappers like as well, I make pop music, but the lyrics aren’t corny, they say somethin.
SLABUP: Which artist has reached out the most and shown you support?
MP: Man, a lot, first of all my best friend is Big Sean, It’s a cool story man, you know, I am from the suburbs of Detroit and he is from the city, and if you don’t know Big Sean’s story but he got signed by rapping for Kanye at the radio station in Detroit and that’s how Kanye discovered him, and after that happened I interned at that same station, so that’s how I met Big Sean. It’s a cool story cuz we never would have met if it wasn’t for music and now we’re like best friends. But what artists have shown support? Umm, Bun B had my stuff on his ipod down in Texas. Jay-Z, that was probably the craziest, KiD CuDi I met in Texas he was really cool. But I don’t wanna build who I am off of someone who likes me haha, but I have been blessed with a lot of people showin support.
SLABUP: What are you bumpin right now on your ipod?
MP: People ask me that a lot haha and I never remember, lemme think, oh, I just gave the Lady Gaga album the whole listen, I wish I had listened to the album when it first came out cuz I had to skip through all the single, but yah I love her. I just got a bunch of beats from producers in Detroit so I was listening to those on the plane haha, I know that’s not the coolest answer haha.
SLABUP: Which artist would you want to do a track with in the future?
MP: Young Jeezy (answered right away), His voice is so awesome, we are kinda equivalents haha maybe the song should be called Mr. Raspy! People be like “Who’s your favorite rapper?” I’ll be like “Andre 3000, Jeezy” people be like “Jeezy? Your joking” but I am like “Naw he’s like my favorite rapper” you like Jeezy for different reasons than you like Andre 3000 ya know? His ad-libs (then MP went on to demonstrate the infamous Jeezy ad-libs) HUHAA!! YEEEEEAA!!
SLABUP: Your mixtape "Matter of Time" has created a lot of noise in the music world in 2009, is there anything else we can expect from you this year?
MP: Yah definitely! I am gonna do another mixtape probably in the fall sometime, kinda like a going back to school present, I am working on that right now. Also working on my album at the same time which will probably come out in 2010 sometime. I don’t know what my next mixtape will be called yet but we’ll see.
SLABUP: What is your favorite Chip Tha Ripper song? And would you be open for a colab with Chip?
MP: The one he did with Sean! I met him at Sean’s release party, and yah I wanna colab with everybody! I actually did a show in University of Dayton and everyone was like “Man you need to do a song with Chip” so, we’ll see what happens.
SLABUP: Anything else that the world should know about Mike Posner before we sign off?
MP: I am more awesome than your favorite artist! Ha! nah but you can download my mixtape for free off of itunes, just type in my name! and check out my website www.MikePosner.com

NORMLizer – The L-Word
While the American public clearly, even enthusiastically, supports medical access to cannabis (75%) and decriminalization for adult possession (73%), a significantly smaller portion of the population (42%) supports outright legalization. Thankfully, that didn’t stop California Assemblyman Tom Ammiano (D-San Francisco) from boldly introducing legislation in March to finally legalize the sale of cannabis for non-medical purposes – i.e., for responsible adult use!
Proponents, including NORML, framed the Marijuana Control, Regulation and Education Act as a way to generate more than $1 billion in new tax revenues and reduced enforcement costs in California – a tough case to argue against in these troubling economic times. So let the debate begin in earnest, particularly now that a viable marijuana-legalization bill has been introduced in the nation’s largest state (which also happens to be the nation’s most cannabis-tolerant – and cash-strapped – state), with the world’s eight-largest economy and an already existing semi-legal retail market for medical cannabis – a market that’s clearly leaving billions of uncollected tax dollars on the table, unable to benefit a general population that supports legalization and control.

Here’s the footage of the 2001 incident in which C-Murder tried to body the owner of Baton Rouge venue Club Raggs. Fortunately for the club owner, his gun jammed, unfortunately for him, it was all caught on video tape. Yesterday, he plead no-contest to the attempted murder charge, and he is expected to be sentence to 10 years in jail for the incident. So with that behind him, all he has to worry about now is his upcoming re-trial for the 2002 murder of 16 year old Steven Thomas at another club in Harvey, LA.

T.I. Heads to Jail Today (By Noon)
FORREST CITY, Ark. — Police guarded the rural road leading to Forrest City’s federal prison complex Tuesday, awaiting the arrival of T.I. The Atlanta rapper was to begin serving time on a weapons conviction.
Five officers from nearby Forrest City set up a roadblock along Arkansas 1, about a 1/10th mile away from the federal prison. Prisoners in white jumpsuits could be seen jogging inside the fencing of the gray prison complex early Tuesday morning.
T.I., whose real name is Clifford J. Harris Jr., had a noon deadline to report to the minimum-security prison on the complex to begin serving his year and a day sentence. It was unclear whether he’d arrive from the airport in nearby Memphis, Tenn., or if he’d fly directly to the rural airport in the eastern Arkansas town, surrounded by the flat rice fields and poverty of the Delta.

GLC - Live at the Wild Hare
Gangsta L. Crisis had his Flight School concert at the Wild Hare in the lovely Wrigleyville neighborhood. I love seeing Hip Hop shows over there because the traditional Wrigley crowd look into the windows of Wild Hare trying to figure out exactly what's going on in there. A little different from Sluggers, okay guys?
When I arrived to the venue, there was a line around the corner, so GLC defintiely brought the people out last night. I also gotta give it up to Dillaman who did a great job with the promotion (shouts to Dilla!). I arrived when YP was taking the stage, and I saw Eugene up there with his trusty camera, so look for some of that footage to surface shortly. Ha!
The great thing about GL's performance, was that he performed a bunch of never-before-heard tracks from his upcoming debut, Love, Life & Loyalty, including "The Big Knot" featuring Bump J and "Cold as Ice" featuring Twista. Obviously, Bump was NOT there to perform with GL, but G was nice enough to let a portion of his verse play, which you can hear for the very first time on FSD. I know you're going to be thirsty for that one.
Hit the jump to see him perform "Cold As Ice" (sans Cavalier) and "So Real" (a snippet of which was featured on the I Ain't Even on Yet mixtape).

Billboard Claims Em Will Sell Up to 650k+/- with #1 Spot
via. HipHopUpdate.
Four and a half years after he released his last studio album, Eminem is headed for his fifth straight No. 1 debut next week on the Billboard 200. The artist's "Relapse" (Shady/Aftermath/Interscope) could sell as many as 650,000 copies in its first week, based on projections from industry prognosticators.
If it manages more than 600,000, it would easily mark the biggest sales week of the year for any album, and the best since AC/DC's "Black Ice" began with 784,000 copies last October.
The title also leads the Nielsen SoundScan Building Chart that was released on May 20, which reflected unweighted sales through the close of business on Tuesday, May 19. Billboard estimates the seven merchants who report to Nielsen SoundScan's Building chart -- Trans World Entertainment, Best Buy, iTunes, Starbucks, Borders, Target and Anderson Merchandisers -- comprise about 60% of all U.S. album sales.
When and if "Relapse" debuts at the top next week, it'll give Eminem his fifth overall No. 1. His only album to miss the top spot was his "Slim Shady LP" debut, which bowed and peaked at No. 2 in 1999.

Video: GLC feat. Bun B - "Clockin' Lotsa Dollars" (Behind the Scenes Pt.1)
via. FakeShoreDrive.
Yesterday, I shot out to a 'secret location' to snatch some behind the scenes footage of GLC's next single/video, "Clockin' Lotsa Dollars", featuring the Underground King himself, Bun B. Bun and GLC both flew in from out of town to film their segments with director extraordinaire Travis of Ike Films.
I can't reveal too much about the video or the song itself, but I can tell you that it's a monster (produced by Xcel), and it should be dropping sometime in June (the video and the track).
In the clip above, GLC and Bun B talk a little bit about pimpin', Church, Church on the move as well as a pair of "Air Superman's" that made it through the door.
It was truly an honor to be at the shoot and chop it up with Bun in-depth, and not just on some interviewer/interviewee type ish. Bun was dropping a lot of gems on the people in attendance and sharing classic UGK stories as well as discussing some of the the Pimp Chad Butler's finer moments.
After the shoot everyone hit the release party for Naledge's Chicago Picasso, which was a blast and featured a whole slew of Chi City notables: The Cool Kids, Really Doe, Mic Terror, Timbuck2, the whole Brainiac Society (Vic, Fooch, Bighomie DOE, Dre, etc), Chip tha Ripper, YP, Prolyfic, the RH Crew, Marc Moran, Michael Kolar, Bullet, Verse, John Monopoly and others.
