Senator Wants Legalization “On the Table”

Calling the American prison system “a national disgrace,” Senator Jim Webb (D-Virginia) has vowed to tackle this problem head on, starting with a rational look at our entire criminal justice system – including the War on Drugs and the possible legalization of marijuana.

“If you go back to 1980 as a starting point, I think we had 40,000 people in prison on drug charges, and today, we have about 500,000 of them,” the first-term Virginia lawmaker tells CNN, reiterating his call for a high-level blue ribbon commission to address this issue. “With so many of our citizens in prison compared with the rest of the world, there are only two possibilities: Either we are home to the most evil people on earth or we are doing something different – and vastly counterproductive.”

Webb’s statement would appear to support the small, but growing, group of lawmakers in Washington who have recently endorsed marijuana legalization, including Reps. Loretta Sanchez (D-Calif.), Jim McDermott (D-Wash.), Dana Rohrabacher (R-Calif.) and Ron Paul (R-Texas).
