Two-hour shark fight caught on tape, sparks controversy

A New Orleans spear fisherman has been thrust into the spotlight after dramatic photos of him in an underwater death match with a 12-foot tiger shark appeared in an outdoors adventure magazine, The Times-Picayune reports.

Craig B. Clasen and two friends were free diving -- deep sea diving with only a mask -- and spear fishing yellowfin tuna near a Gulf of Mexico oil rig last June when the shark darted toward their videographer. Clasen said he swam between Ryan McInnis and the animal, shooting it first with his speargun. When that failed, he became entangled in a two-hour underwater battle, which ended when he slit the 1,000-pound shark's throat.

Back on the boat, Clasen said the men cut a off a filet and ate it sashimi-style. "It tasted like oatmeal with rubber bands in it," Clasen told Outside magazine.
