Most unemployment rates are up in Northeast Ohio

CLEVELAND -- Unemployment rates in Northeast Ohio for the most part followed the statewide trend of increasing between April and May, according to figures released Tuesday by the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services.

The only exceptions were Portage County, where the rate barely moved, by inching down by .2 percent and Summit County, where the jobless rate stood still.

As has been the trend this year, all rates are up dramatically from 2008. Northeast Ohio still tends to have rates lower than the rest of Ohio.

Here are the local unemployment rates for May, which are not seasonally adjusted:

• Cuyahoga, 10.1 percent, up from 9.0 in April. In May 2008, the rate was 6.9 percent.
• Geauga, 8.0 percent, up from 7.3 in April. In May 2008, the rate was 5.1 percent.
• Lake, 9.5 percent, up from 8.5 in April. In May 2008, the rate was 5.7 percent.
• Lorain, 11.4 percent, up from 10.6 percent in April. In May 2008, the rate was 6.3 percent.
• Medina, 9.3 percent, up from 8.3 percent in April. In May 2008, the rate was 5.7 percent.
• Portage 10 percent, down from 10.2 in April. In May 2008, the rate was 5.5 percent.
• Summit, 9.7 percent, the same as in April. In May 2008, the rate was 5.7 percent.
